Liam Payne, the former One Direction member, has passed away at the age of 31.

Liam Payne, a former member of the boyband One Direction, has tragically died after falling from a hotel window in Buenos Aires, according to local police. He was 31 years old.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at a hotel located on Costa Rica Street in the Palermo neighborhood, as detailed in a police statement provided to CNN.

Authorities reported that officers from the 14B Police Station were called to the hotel Wednesday afternoon in response to a 911 call regarding an aggressive individual who appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The police did not specifically identify the individual as Payne.

Just weeks prior, Payne was seen in Argentina attending a concert by his former bandmate Niall Horan on October 2, with videos from the event shared on social media.

He had celebrated his 31st birthday in the UK recently, as seen in posts on his Snapchat. Born in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, he was the youngest of three siblings and studied music technology at the City of Wolverhampton College.

Payne rose to fame as part of One Direction, alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Horan. The group was formed in 2010 after each member participated in the UK version of the reality competition show “The X Factor.”

CNN has reached out to Payne’s representatives and former bandmates for comment.

In a 2015 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Payne expressed his love for performing and songwriting with the group, highlighting his pride in co-writing their song "What a Feeling." He recalled how the song came together, inspired by Fleetwood Mac, describing it as a "nice driving jam—imagine driving down the coast."

One Direction announced a hiatus in 2015, and Liam Payne released his debut solo album, “LP1,” in 2019. In May 2023, he revealed he was working on a new album that he was “really excited” about and mentioned plans for a tour.

Payne had been candid about his past struggles with substance abuse and spoke about completing treatment and achieving six months of sobriety by the summer of 2023.

The tour was scheduled to begin in South America in September 2023, but he had to postpone the dates due to a kidney infection.

In March of this year, Payne released the song “Teardrops.”

He was a father to a son, born in 2017, whom he shared with former Girls Aloud member Cheryl Cole. In a YouTube video from 2023, Payne expressed his deep love for his son, Bear, saying, “He’s awesome. He’s growing up far too quickly. He’s far more smart than I think I’ll ever be. He’s a wonder.”
